Honorable Mention
Happy
M. Kathryn Black

His face is red
and fingers dance inside his pants--
"Hey Katy, little Katy now."
He breathes too close;
he could set a fire with a match.
I run away betrayed,
and after that he stalks my steps.

The other kids call him Happy,
but I know he's not.
At least he's not like Johnny Gunn
who smells bicycle seats,
who's a stone-faced giant on thorazine.
But Happy's pants are full of worms
when he rises from behind a boat
or stands half-hidden on a pier.
Watch out, there's death in there.
